Here's an example of fake news. The original source (government) of data set aside, this story was written by Rebecca Harrington of the Business Insider and syndicated on Yahoo.
The headline reads,
Before we examine subsequent content, let's examine the definition of "deport" as the foundation of this story.
de • port (/dǝ pôrt/)
verb: 1. expel (a foreigner) from a country, typically on the grounds of illegal status or for having committed a crime.
The article continues:
"How many did Obama deport?
During Obama's eight years in office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported over 3.1 million unauthorized immigrants. Most unauthorized immigrants who were apprehended inside of the country, not at the border, were convicted criminals, according to DHS.
In 2016, ICE officials removed 240,255 people, 58% of whom had criminal histories. Of the 65,332 people apprehended inside the country, 92% had been convicted of a crime, according to DHS statistics."
Based on the definition alone "deported over 3.1 million" is not a true statement. The writer walks around the phrase "not at the border" and appears to hide the more important factors that differentiate "deport" and "refused entry" while ignoring character prerequisites and considerations made on all immigrants applying for legal entry into the U.S.A..
Breaking down the numbers:
Is this "Common Core" math? According to numbers quoted by Business Insider, 174,923 of the 240,255 people claimed to have been deported in 2016 never touched our soil. Of course, we're using proper math and common sense.
If roughly 65,000 Illegal Aliens is the actual number of 'deportations' made annually by the Obama Administration, only 520,000 people (not 3.1 million) were actually "deported" during Obama's two terms.
The actual number of deportations for 2016 is only 65,332. Nearly all, 60,105 (or, 98%) of the people removed from inside US borders had been "convicted of a crime"!
More than half, 58% (or, 139,348 people) of all those "In-Country and Deported" and those "Refused Entry" had criminal histories. We'll never know how many were actually fleeing incarceration or hadn't been caught before but this is the character of people trying to enter the United States of America.
Supporters of illegal immigrants / immigration who advocate America unilaterally allow illegal aliens and any criminal into and/or 'to otherwise remain' in our country should consider the high risk of this opposition to proper immigration procedures and vetting. Look back to the illegal aliens that attacked America on September 11, 2001 and more recently at the impact on countries around the world who supported the mass exodus from the Middle East.
Fake News is not always the direct misrepresentations we've been seeing lately. In many cases we find factual information hidden between the lines of news content as written. But, when it's written with intent to mislead or misinform by inferring to an untruth as truth - it's still Fake News.
