Switch Network Systems
Proprietary and Standard KVM Protocol Networking Concepts

Introduction

Early multi-console KVMS systems are defined as the first KVM Networks. Apex and Cybex (later merged to form Avocent) introduced two completely different topologies in 1995 - both of these products are still in use today. The underlying technology of KVMS supports analog signal communication and was originally designed entirely on proprietary protocols. Experienced design engineers detail three component levels that interconnect the hardware; servers to KVM routers to the user consoles. These topologies also used Cat 5 cable to connect the various hardware components to form a proprietary analog network. Unlike the data networks, this analog network was for and supported access to the front end of computer hardware in contrast to a NICs (network interface cards) that provide binary file networking services that transfers data between hard drives.

The ultimate evolution of KVM switching has matured to a KVM Network that integrates analog and digital technologies that communicate side by side for local as well as global access and control to the front end of your servers.

While it is possible to fork lift your existing analog KVM Network and replace it with a system purely based on digital technology, few companies have the capital resources to make such a change nor would it be necessary. The pages that follow are a discussion of analog KVM switch systems and how you should view those components already in place. Once you understand the concept of the KVM Network, you'll be prepared to effectively lead your company's transition from legacy analog technology to a new digital KVM Network.
